The title “Chiropractor” is protected by law and all practicing professionals must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC). The GCC oversees the professional conduct and standards of care provided by chiropractors. Your chiropractor’s name must appear on the GCC register.

All types of medical intervention (treatment) have an inherent risk of an adverse side effect be this a visit to the dentist, doctor or chiropractor. Based on the best evidence available chiropractic treatment is low risk.

Prior to having any treatment from a chiropractor the patient will be given an explanation of what may happen next.

One obvious difference is the type of education. All chiropractors at thebackplace have successfully completed a minimum of a full-time four year degree course.

Both professions perform “spinal manipulation” as a treatment for spinal joint pain. There may be some difference in the technique as to how this is performed, a bit like professional golfers having different styles of “swing”.

Sciatica, like its sister term lumbago, were used when the level of knowledge about back pain was low and patients had to be told something. Sciatica is a word that is used to describe a patient’s symptoms. If pain starts in the low back and travels down the leg patients are often told they have sciatica. This just describes a patient’s symptoms – it is not a diagnosis. The starting point of any medical treatment is an appropriate diagnosis.

Discs in the spine do not slip. They may become injured and change shape but this is something different. At thebackplace we will carry out a comprehensive physical exam to determine if a disc between the vertebrae is involved in your problem.

Chiropractic may be available to patients under the umbrella of the NHS, but this will depend on the specific NHS Primary Care Trust. Otherwise patients see chiropractors in a private capacity, either through self-referral or as a result of a referral from their GP, other doctor or health professional. BCA chiropractors also treat people who are seeking treatment through private health insurers.

Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession, so you do not need to be referred by your doctor. A chiropractor is trained to diagnose your problem and will refer you to another health-care practitioner if necessary.
